capacity building
Capacity building in the Academy of Innovative Research, Science & Technological Development (AcIRSTD) is continuous, integrated process of strengthening the knowledge, skills, infrastructure, and institutional frameworks necessary to develop, adapt, and utilize science, technology, and innovation (STI) for sustainable socioeconomic development. The Academy acts as hubs of expertise, aiming to foster a “critical mass” of scientists and ensure that evidence-based knowledge informs national policy.
AcIRSTD Core Areas of Capacity Building
Capacity building within these academies generally spans three main levels:
- Individual (Human Capital):The Academy creates conditions for the development of scientific schools, the training of highly qualified scientific workers, the advanced training of scientists and specialists, including in foreign scientific centres; participates in the training of specialists with higher education and enhances the qualifications of the teaching staff of institutions providing higher education. This is also includes scientific and training of highly qualified scientific personnel, educational institutions with the status of a university, as well as foundations.
The Academy develops the technical, research, and leadership skills of scientists and engineers through fellowships, grants, workshops, and mentoring, particularly for young researchers and women in science.
- Institutional:Enhancing the operational, governance, and strategic management capabilities of the academy itself to become a sustainable, visible, and influential body within the national science ecosystem.
- Systemic/Environmental:Strengthening the overall STI ecosystem by encouraging research-industry linkages, promoting international partnerships, and facilitating evidence-based policy advice.
Key Components and Programmes
The Academy of Innovative Research, Science & Technological Development (AcIRSTD) implements capacity building through various mechanisms:
- Grants and Fellowships:Providing funding for research projects and, in some cases, offering doctoral or post-doctoral opportunities.
- Training and Education:Organizing specialized workshops, short courses, and postgraduate programmes (e.g., in space science or technology management), often involving experts from academia and industry.
- Science Advice and Policy Support:Guiding government policy by offering evidence-based reports on critical issues, such as health, agriculture, and climate change.
- Networking and Cooperation:Fostering collaboration through regional networks to share best practices.
Goals and Impact
The ultimate objectives of these programs are:
- Strengthening National Innovation Systems:Improving the ability of Nigeria, and Africa to generate scientific knowledge and translate it into practical applications.
- Addressing Local Challenges:Utilizing science to solve specific national problems, such as water access, energy reliability, and agricultural productivity.
- Inclusivity and Sustainability:Promoting gender equality and diversity in science while ensuring long-term, sustainable development.
- Developing Technology Management Skills:Training professionals to manage technological change and enhance economic competitiveness.
