Associate Fellows are elected from active and outstanding non-Nigerian scientists residing elsewhere or in Nigeria who have made significant contributions to the development of researchers, as well as the development of science, technology and innovation in the country and Africa. Non-African scientists who have taken citizenship of a Nigeria nation and Nigeria-born scientists who may have taken citizenship outside Nigeria will be considered under the category, ‘Fellows’. 

Individuals applying for Associate Fellowship may be fairly new to a role in research and/or support for learning or may have a limited research portfolio; for example, some sessional/ part time staff or early career researchers with some research responsibilities. They may be new or experienced staff with specific roles in supporting higher education learning such as technicians, librarians, professional staff, learning technologists, careers advisors, etc. It is not role dependent; you will need to explore whether you have sufficient evidence of appropriate teaching and or/support for learning practice to make a successful application.

Eligibility

  • The Associate Fellowship to a young scientist and technologists working, Early career researchers with some teaching responsibilities (e.g. Ph.D. students, GTAs, contract researchers/post-doctoral students, etc.)
  • Staff new to teaching (including those with part-time academic responsibilities)
  • Staff who support academic provision (e.g. learning technologists, learning developers, and learning resource/library staff)
  • Staff who undertakes demonstrator/technician roles that incorporate some teaching-related responsibilities working in Nigeria or outside Nigeria shall be made in recognition of notable contributions to any branch of science or technology, recognized by the Academy.
  • AcIRSTD Associate Fellows will be selected on the basis of the work done in Nigeria and any significant work done by nominees outside Nigeria. In multi-authored papers, the committee is expected to evaluate the specific contribution of the nominee by considering factors such as their role as the first author, corresponding author, or co-corresponding author.
  • By assessing the extent of their contribution, the committee can accurately evaluate the nominee’s individual contribution to the collaborative work.

Nomination

Each candidate for Fellowship must be nominated by two Fellows of the Academy, who sign a certificate of proposal. The certificate includes a statement of the principal grounds on which the proposal is being made and is available for inspection by other Fellows. The completed certificate of proposal must be received by 30 September each year.

The proposing Fellows are responsible for informing the candidate that they have been nominated. The proposers must ensure, in consultation with the candidate, that all information relevant to the nomination is up to date.

There is no limit on the number of new nominations made in any year. Once nominated, candidates remain eligible for election for seven years. If not elected within this period, an individual may be proposed as a candidate again after a break of three years and then remains eligible for election for a period of three years. This three year cycle may be repeated without limit.

The Academy does not provide details of the identities of nominated candidates to anybody outside the Fellowship, except those individuals consulted in confidence during the refereeing process.
