NWRI and AcIRSTD announce strategic partnership to tackle Nigeria's water challenges
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The National Water Resources Institute (NWRI) and Academy of Innovative Research, Science & Technological Development (AcIRSTD) Announce Strategic Partnership to Tackle Nigeria’s Water Challenges
KADUNA, NIGERIA — The National Water Resources Institute (NWRI) and the Academy of Innovative Research, Science & Technological Development (AcIRSTD) have officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a strategic partnership. This collaboration aims to advance scientific research, technological innovation, and capacity building in Nigeria's water resources sector.
This groundbreaking collaboration unites the National Water Resources Institute (NWRI)’s deep operational water expertise with the Academy of Innovative Research, Science & Technological Development (AcIRSTD)’s world-class scientific research framework. Together, the organizations will launch joint research initiatives, fund innovative water purification projects, and provide data-driven policy recommendations to governments facing severe drought and water scarcity.
The partnership brings together NWRI’s extensive regulatory and training expertise in water management with AcIRSTD’s cutting-edge scientific research capabilities. Together, the institutions will focus on developing sustainable solutions for water purification, climate change adaptation, groundwater management, and smart irrigation systems across Nigeria.
The immediate roadmap for the alliance includes a joint national symposium on climate change and watershed management. Additionally, the organizations will co-publish an annual "Global Water Health Assessment" report to track water quality trends in Nigeria.
Partnership between NWRI and AcIRSTD marks a significant milestone in our mission to secure Nigeria's water future. By combining NWRI institutional strengths with AcIRSTD’s research innovative capabilities, the two institutions can accelerate the deployment of homegrown technological solutions to combat water scarcity and improve resource management.
Science and technology must directly address societal needs, collaboration between NWRI and AcIRSTD allows us to transition academic and scientific research from the laboratory directly into the field, creating a measurable impact on clean water access and environmental sustainability for millions of Nigerians.
Key initiatives under this partnership include:
Translate independent, rigorous scientific research into actionable policies for national water governance, climate-change adaptation, and watershed modelling.
Partner to transform laboratory research, which includes water quality monitoring, water recycling, and biotreatment into real-world, scalable solutions.
Establish institutional frameworks and professional training to improve the skills of water sector personnel and technicians.
Promote sustainable development by coordinating research across science, agriculture, and sanitation to protect ecosystems and public health.
Encourage homegrown technological solutions specific to local ecosystems, minimizing reliance on foreign engineering and imported techniques.
Specialized training workshops, seminars, and exchange programs for water sector professionals, researchers, and engineers.
Translating research findings into actionable policy briefs to support government data-driven decisions on water governance.
The joint committee established by both institutions will commence operations immediately, with the first phase of collaborative research projects scheduled to launch next quarter.
